Meritus F1 Drivers
Every team’s dream is to assist drivers to achieve their lifelong ambition of racing in F1. Since expanding our operation to Asia in 1995, Meritus have helped, funded and assisted of four of our Asian drivers on their way to F1. Our ultimate dream would be for these four drivers to join a Meritus-branded F1 team at some time in the future!
Narain Karthikeyan

Since Narain won the 1996 AF2000 Championship with Meritus, he has now been involved with 3 F1 teams. Through his sponsorship by Ford India he had a test drive with Jordan in 2000 and later when Ford bought Stewart and rebranded it Jaguar, he had a second test opportunity. It wasn’t until he switched sponsorship to the largest auto manufacturer in India, Tata, that he found the GBP10million that allowed him to join the Jordan Midland team in 2005. His inaugural Australian GP race and his inaugural Malaysian GP races and his 12th place finish gave him worldwide attention. We are very proud of the fact that his only championship success to date has been with Meritus. |
Takuma Sato

Takuma Sato joined the Meritus team for the Macau Grand Prix in 1999. Winning second position on the grid after an enormous testing accident, Takuma led every lap from green light to chequered flag in the most domineering fashion ever experienced at the Macau GP. Our ex-commercial director, Matthew Winter, now represents Takuma’s marketing and exploitation programmes. We are very proud of the support that Takuma Sato continues to provide the team saying that without help from professional racing teams such as ourselves he would never have made it to F1. |
Ho Pin Tung

Ho Pin Tung won 10 out of 14 races in the 2003 Formula BMW championship and in doing so became one of Meritus lifelong friends. His professionalism on the track was only matched by his professionalism off the track. The atmosphere that he created within the team resulted in a harmony and team spirit conducive to winning. At the time of the announcement that he would have a test in a BMW Williams F1 car, the support from his team was only surpassed by his championship success. Although the team were unable to attend and watch his lifelong dream come true, our thoughts and good wishes were with him. One day soon, we have no doubt that Ho Pin Tung will be a great F1 driver, and his ability to speak in 8 languages makes him an excellent ambassador for any sponsor. |
Marchy Lee Ying Kin

Marchy Lee was born to be a racer, following in the footsteps of his father Eddie. At the age of 11 he started karting and became professional at 13. By 20 years of age he had won his first FIA formula championship going on to finish in the top four during 3 years international formula racing in France. The Asian financial crisis of 1997 caused him to lose the next five years of his career but his outstanding performance of 12 wins from 14 starts in the 2004 Formula BMW Asia championship has truly focused attention once again on Marchy Lee. Paul Stoddard, Team Principal of Minardi F1, has shown true professionalism by inviting Marchy Lee Ying Kin to test in a Minardi F1 car in Europe during the 2005 season. Meritus are very proud to support Marchy Lee and Minardi during this, his first F1 test. |
Jazeman Jaafar

Jazeman is the youngest Meritus driver to taste an F1, perhaps even the youngest driver ever to taste the Willaims F1 Simulator. Jazeman was invited by Sir Frank williams to tryout the simulator at the Williams technology center on the 14th May 2007. 14 year old Jazeman lapped the Sepang circuit after 50 laps 2.2 second of the 1.35.00 pace set in qualifying for the Malaysian F1GP by Williams driver Nico Rosberg. |
